This week we reviewed the 9 principles of child development. The second principle states “All domains of child development—physical development, cognitive development, social and emotional development, and linguistic development (including bilingual or multilingual development), as well as approaches to learning—are important; each domain both supports and is supported by the others. This is the main idea behind the “Holistic Approach” to education.
<
>This week we build from that principle to expand our knowledge related to the domains of development and consider what it means to have a holistic approach to education. Based on this principle we recognize that children grow and learn in areas or “domains.” Different graphics or resources may list 4 or 5 domains, but no matter how domains or areas of development are organized, remember we want to consider how children grow: physically, cognitively, socially, emotionally and verbally (their language).
<
>These encompass the four domains or areas of development. Historically, well-intentioned teachers (and some parents) have focused solely on cognitive potential ignoring the other three areas of development. In order to best support children using DAP, we must see the “whole child” and acknowledge that all areas of development are equally important!
<
>Watch the video, then reflect on the following questions: and reflect on this video, try to identify what you see related to the domains of development.
<
1.What can you learn about this child’s development in each of the following areas: social, emotional, cognitive, language and physical?
<
2. How does observation support your knowledge of children holistically? Why should we be more holistic in our assessment and planning?
<
3.What other principles of development support a holistic approach?
<
4. What is one experience you could plan for this child in the classroom that would reflect developmentally appropriate practice (DAP) based on what you observed?
