*Staying in compliance with EEO law and making sure diversity is represented in the workforce is the responsibility of the HR manager and staff as assigned. However, it is not only a good idea and a legal imperative to be fair, it makes good business sense as well. In this chapter, you will examine the process of performance management as well as a number of approaches for measuring performance. The criteria for assessing the effectiveness of performance measurement include whether the performance management system supports the firm’s goals and strategy, is an accurate measure of what is intended (i.e., validity), provides consistent results (i.e., reliability), for practical user application, and tells employees what they should do to meet the firm’s expectations. This chapter explores some basic approaches to performance measurement and some of the legal and ethical considerations as well.
