This is a recording of Admiral Richard Byrd’s call for an end to war and an expanded international effort to prevent the outbreak of another great war (April 6, 1937) -2.45 minutes.
After listening to the excerpt of the speech, answer the following questions:
1- What were your initial expectations?
2- How credible do you find the speaker-even before he began to speak?
3- What was the central idea to the speech?
4- What messages held your attention? Why?
5- Identify at least one barrier that you (or someone else) might set up?
        Richard E. Byrd, American aviator and polar explorer.  On the 20th anniversary of the American entrance into WWI, he called for an expanded international effort to prevent the outbreak of another great war.  He had fought with distinction as a U.S. Navy flier during WWI, but after the war he focused on peaceful exploration.  In 1926 he won the Congressional Medal of Honor.  In 1927 he made one of the earliest flights across the Atlantic.  He died in 1957.
